Using simulation and through the augmentation of human intelligence we are going to build more understanding and reframe how we all see the world.
Founded by simulation expert Justin Lyon in 2016, Simudyne graduated from the Barclays TechStars programme in 2017 and Mastercard Start Path in 2018. We have since expanded rapidly with a team of first-class talent, including PhDs with a wealth of expertise in financial services and beyond.
We are active participants in the journey
We strive to create products and systems that ignite change at an emotional, attitudinal and behavioral level.
We take a step by step approach
We believe that real change comes from incrementally involving the way people think, one step, one decision at a time.
We put better tools in the hands of people
We see technology as an enabler and are obsessed with making it as simple and elegant to use as possible.
At Simudyne we are interested in working with the brightest minds in the industry. Here’s a small selection of our people…
“Every decision of consequence should be subject to a computer simulation.”
Ever since his studies at MIT in System Dynamics, Justin Lyon, Founder and CEO of Simudyne, has been fascinated by applications of AI and machine learning to inform decision-making. As a serial technology entrepreneur, he has been at the forefront of the ways in which these technologies will enable the world’s business, government and civic leaders to shape a better world for the next generation. “When I was a wrangler in South Africa, I rode a hippo in the water. Her name was Jessica”.
“Simudyne provides a wonderful environment to design calibration algorithms. We have so many interesting problems that it’s easy to test and develop new ideas. I really enjoy the challenge that comes with calibrating cutting edge models for production environments and thinking of new ways to blur the lines between simulation and reality.”
Amir was a postdoctoral researcher at the Capital Fund Management – Imperial College, Institute of Quantitative Finance with Rama Cont, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in the Centre d’Économie de la Sorbonne in Paris with Antoine Mandel as part of the EU Horizons 2020 DOLFINS project and Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies with Andrea Roventini as part of the EU Horizons 2020 ISIGrowth project. He received his PhD in Machine Learning from INRIA-Lille in France under the supervision of Rémi Munos and Alessandro Lazaric. “I keep sharp by calibrating the grain variety, water hardness and air pressure of my coffee machine with a bandit algorithm.”
“With technological advances, we are now able to productise computationally-intensive agent-based modelling in various areas from finance to smart-grid management. This new paradigm of modelling is very promising for modelling complex non-linear dynamics that have all too often been approximated by simpler linear models.”
Krishnen started his academic career at Imperial College London, followed by a PhD in AI at the University of Southampton where he spent a number of years as a Senior Research Fellow doing research at the intersection of micro-economics, agent-based modelling and machine learning with over 30 peer-reviewed publications in top AI conferences and journals. He later joined the finance industry as a Market Risk and Credit Risk Quant, starting at SunGard and more recently as JPMorgan, before joining Simudyne.
Krishnen is from Mauritius and loves hiking – his best hike remains the Kilauea Iki Trail in Hawaii.
“Before joining, I looked at what Simudyne were trying to do and I thought – that is the future. I wanted to be part of it.”
Sezin trained as an interior designer and studied Art for her master’s degree. After pivoting into the very different world of software engineering, she became specialized in agile project development. Her favourite activity? Chasing soap bubbles – “I love them. If I see them, I’ll chase them and claim them!”
“What we are working on is cutting edge, from machine learning to AI and agent-based models. I have to bring creative ideas every day in order to deliver the most innovative software.”
Dashan studied at Cardiff University where he completed his PhD in Computer Science. After positions at UBS, Visa and Citibank he decided to join Simudyne. He likes to swim in his spare time – “That’s if I’ve got spare time… at the weekend I usually do childcare!”
“Living the dream of implementing in the industry what I have done as a researcher over the past decade with a top team and cutting-edge technology”
Dr. Edgar Lopez-Rojas obtained PhD at Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden. His thesis “Applying simulation to the problem of detecting financial fraud” produced the PaySim simulator which enabled practitioners and enthusiasts of financial fraud to deeply study the topic using a new approach based on synthetic generated datasets.
“I grew up in Medellin, Colombia at the same time as Pablo Escobar where I witnessed the deep change that fraud, corruption and lack of controls causes to societies. This battle is personal!”
“I’ve always been interested in emergence and complexity and Simudyne provides the perfect opportunity to tackle theses fascinating problems which are becoming increasingly relevant in the modern world. I’m especially keen to see how Machine learning can enhance agent-base models (and vice-versa).”
Jordan completed his Ph.D. in mathematical physics at the University of Nottingham, then moved into algo-trading before making the push into data-science and machine-learning. His first degree before he went into physics was in Photography!
We are on a journey together to transform how people make decisions. This is not just a job, it’s a mission; we see ourselves as missionaries rather than mercenaries, as advanced tool makers, agents of change and navigators of the unknown. We are always looking for people with curious minds who want to join us on our journey to transform how people make decisions. If this sounds like you, then please get in touch.
